Kivalo Design is a Finnish camping brand from Rovaniemi, Lapland. Although we are still quite new as a brand, we have decades of experience in the camping and knife industry behind us. I am Heikki, designer and manufacturer of Kivalo products, and together with our team we share the same passion: to make practical, durable and beautiful tools that will serve their users for a long time. Kivalo products are manufactured in Viirinkylä, Rovaniemi.

We manufacture wooden kitchen utensils such as chopping boards, butter knives and frying spatulas from carefully selected tar wood. The most important thing for us is that each product works in use and lasts for a long time. Whether you're in the home kitchen, at the cottage or at the campfire.

Why do we use wood?

We use carefully selected larch in our products. This wood is lightweight, warm in colour and beautifully textured, making it the perfect material for kitchens and tableware. We choose the right wood material based on durability, appearance and sustainability. The grain pattern and colour varies from individual to individual, making each board unique.

As well as being a beautiful choice, blackboard is also a practical choice. A wooden kitchen utensil is easy to maintain. Wash it by hand, dry it thoroughly and oil it occasionally. Well cared for, it will last for years and only get better with age.

Wood won't rattle, scratch surfaces or feel cold. It's a warm, natural material that's perfect for the kitchen and carries a story with it.

We finish our utensils with a food-safe paraffin oil that protects the wood, keeps it breathable and makes it feel comfortable to use. Every instrument looks and feels a little different, and that's how it should.

Why is every Kivalo instrument made by hand - and what does that mean for the user?

We don't have a conveyor belt. Every Kivalo product is designed, polished and finished by hand in Rovaniemi, in the peace of northern nature. I am responsible for the design and testing of the products myself. I use them in my own kitchen, and if something doesn't feel right, I make a better version.

But the work is not done alone. At Kivalo, we have a small but skilled team, with whom we work together on design, material choices and usability. Each product is unique, but also a result of our joint efforts, and that's where both the appreciation of craftsmanship and experience come in.

We are honoured to produce products with the Key Flag and Design from Finland labels. For us, these are not just stamps, but signs that each product has been designed and manufactured in Finland, responsibly.

We are united by our desire to do things properly, not in a hurry, but with care. Every piece of equipment we send out into the world is a source of pride for us.
